The Flynn Center encourages the creative development of new work by providing artists with in-kind and/or direct financial assistance. Flynn support for artists and the creative process takes many forms.
- Summer Artist Development Projects provide performing artists with the use of Flynn Center facilities, housing, technical and administrative support, and time to explore new works. Through the project, the Flynn has commissioned new work from such renowned artists as choreographers Doug Varone and Liz Lerman and theater artists Marty Pottenger and Chen Shi-Sheng.
- For the 2006-07 season, the Flynn co-commissioned new works by such artists as Maureen Fleming andThomas DeFrantz (Queer Theory!). The Flynn also supports the development of new work by Vermont artists. Recent beneficiaries include Robin Fawcett, Joan Robinson, Susan Sgorbati, and Paul Asbell.
- National artists whose work we have supported include dancemakers Joanna Mendl Shaw and Dancing With Horses, Susan Marshall, Donald Byrd, Ann Carlson for AXIS Dance Company, John Jasperse, and Rennie Harris; renowned theater artist Chen Shi-Zheng, poet and spoken word artist Sekou Sundiata; songwriters and composers Robin Holcomb and Wayne Horvitz; theater artist Marty Pottenger; and puppetry artists Erin Orr and Dan Hurlin. The Flynn has supported the development of works by Vermont artists by commissioning new work. Vermont beneficiaries have included jazzmen James Harvey, Michael Chorney, and Jeff Salisbury, as well as choreographer Hannah Dennison.
- Twice annually the New Arts Space Assistance (NASA) Grant provides Vermont artists or groups with the opportunity to create, rehearse, and perform new work at the Flynn. The grant offers free studio space and the opportunity to present an informal public showing of the work created in FlynnSpace or one of the Flynn's education studios.
- The Flynn also offers local and regional artists opportunities to teach as members of the FlynnArts faculty and to collaborate and take masterclasses with visiting artists.
More than 50 Vermont performers have worked closely with the Flynn in recent years, including choreographers Meg Cottam, tarin chaplin, Sara McMahon, Simone Forti, Polly Motley, Molly Davies, Annette Urbschat, Selene Colburn, and Dominique Zeltsman; musicians David Gusakov, David Kamm, and the Vermont Contemporary Music Ensemble; filmmakers Walter Ungerer and John Douglas; performance artists Deborah Lubow, Bill Botzow, Rusty DeWees, Wendy Stein, and Elaine Segal; puppetry companies Sandglass Theatre and Bread and Puppet; and writers, directors, and producers David Budbill, Stephen Goldberg, and Ken Mills.
