Talented students studying with an incredible guest artist/educator and local professionals who are passionate about teaching? That’s a recipe for greatness! In the true spirit of jazz, we encourage improvisation, individual expression, cooperation, and mutual respect. Students get personalized instruction and special workshops, tickets to the top-tier faculty concert, a gig of their own at week’s end, and introductions to new friends and mentors. It’s a memorable and meaningful week of music-making!

The team of instructors inspires students to reach new heights of creativity and proficiency, with rich opportunities to hone individual skills and master the cooperative team effort of live performance. Students work with world-renowned Arturo O’Farrill (our special guest), camp director Alex Stewart, and members of Rick Davies’ Latin ensemble-in-residence, Jazzismo.

JAZZ COMBO TRACK (for instrumentalists including percussionists): Take clinics specific to your instrument, try your hand at hand percussion, and play in a combo where you’ll learn to apply the principles and nuances of improvisation, investigate chord structure, and develop melodic creativity.

HAND PERCUSSION TRACK (for those with little or no experience as instrumentalists): Uncover the fiery beats of Latin jazz, learning the rhythmic languages of Cuba and the larger African diaspora on congas, clave, timbales, and other instruments.
