Summer Youth Theater
Performers aged 13-19 who are ready to take their skills to the next level and step into the spotlight are invited to audition for our Summer Youth Theater Productions. We work on performance skills in an intensive multi-week rehearsal process, strengthening your “chops” as you prepare for performances in FlynnSpace and elsewhere (which are usually performed to standing-room-only crowds!) Performers have a hand in technical elements of the show—costumes, scenery, and more—and opportunities may be available to participate offstage as stage managers or techies if being in the limelight is not your thing.
Summer 2012 shows are:
The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee
June 25-July 8, 10 am-5:30 pm; Performances: July 5-8
This ridiculously funny ode to overachiever’s angst chronicles the experience of adolescent outsiders who are vying for the spelling championship of a lifetime. The show’s Tony Award-winning creative team made the unlikeliest of hit musicals about the unlikeliest of heroes: a quirky, messed-up, and totally charming cast of outsiders. The spelling bee is the one place they can stand out and fit in at he same time, and it’s where they learn that winning isn’t everything, and losing doesn’t necessarily make you a loser. With complex vocal material, demanding character acting, and the unpredictability of maneuvering different audience volunteer spellers through every show, Spelling Bee challenges its cast to work hard, learn fast (a two-week rehearsal period), and never stop thinking on their F-E-E-T!
Zombie Prom
July 2-22, 12-5:30 pm; Performances: July 19-22
An Alarming Anecdote of Atomic Adolescent Angst! The Twisted Tale of a Teenage Terror who Returns from the Tomb! Sound like a wacky sci-fi comic book to you? You got it! A 1950s horror comic book brought to life as a musical comedy, this show is a campy, rollicking romp through America's Atomic Age. Sweet teen Toffee's "rebel without a cause" boyfriend meets his unhappy end in the nuclear power plant next door to Enrico Fermi High School. When he returns from the dead as a teenage zombie with plans to clean up his act and take Toffee to the senior prom, she is racked with indecision. Worse, Principal Strict refuses to allow "zombie scum" in her fine institution and threatens to (horror!) cancel the senior prom if anyone is caught supporting the cadaver's cause! As the students rally around this clear-cut case of zombie civil rights, the media gets involved, and things go from bad to sensational! A cross between Grease and Little Shop of Horrors, this is an absurdly hilarious show with a ‘50s rock score. Boasting roles for singers, actors, and a VERY busy ensemble of triple threats, Zombie Prom challenges its cast to master fast dances, close harmonies, and the self-aware acting style that only shows with titles this ridiculous call for!
Auditions were held Saturday, March 3 & March 10. Casting has been made. Thank you to all who came out!
