Research has shown that integrating the arts with study of other content significantly deepens student learning and engagement. This interdisciplinary course demonstrates how to integrate layers of material, building on and enriching each other. Preparing for the upcoming quadricentennial celebration of Lake Champlain in 2009, this course focuses on the theories surrounding Samuel de Champlain's exploration of the lake, with the aim of putting faces on the many people living and traveling there during 1609. Participants will explore the many elements of theater -- drama, writing, movement, music, and visual art – and create and perform an original, improvisational production on the beach areas of Shelburne Farms as the culminating in-class activity.
Coursework serves as inspiration for the final project – student-designed units of study integrating an art form with a curricular topic, to be completed by Wednesday, July 30. The reading list will be available before the class begins. A $90 lab fee is due at the first class to cover the cost of readings, curricular materials compiled by Lake Champlain Maritime Museum, and other materials. This course fulfills the Integrating the Arts curriculum course requirement for Arts in Education concentration.
