Authentic Flamenco brought to you straight from the source—Sevilla! La Magdalena takes you to Andalucía, her second home, and the heart of Flamenco. Workshops focus on clarity of movement, coordination, strength building, and the relationship between flamenco music and dance. Train your ear along with your body as you dance simple combinations “por tangos” and “por buleria.” Level I is aimed at beginners and those seeking a refresher—focusing on basic skills from head to toe, including footwork and arms. Level II is for dancers who already have a familiarity with both 4s and 12s. Long, loose skirts are recommended for women; supportive closed shoe with a solid heel required.
LA MAGDALENA is an accomplished professional dancer
who is partially responsible for the revival of the New York
City flamenco scene in the early 1990s. When not teaching,
choreographing, or performing in the U.S., Magdalena can be
found dancing alongside members of the legendary Familia de
Pura, Fernandez, and del Gastor, where she joins por fiesta on the
streets of her second home, Sevilla. Among other ventures, she is
currently coaching singers from the New York City Opera for their
roles in Carmen.
The FlynnArts dance program instills a lifelong love of dance, helping veteran dancers and first-timers alike experience
the unique power of their own bodies as expressive instruments. Classes cover a breadth of styles, teaching technique
while helping students trust their own instincts—instilling confidence and a sense of accomplishment. Classes focus on
process rather than product, but a year-end optional performance satisfies dancers’ desire to share their growth and hard
work with family and friends. Our program is enhanced by connections to the world-class artists who perform on the Flynn
MainStage and share their dance styles and ideas with FlynnArts students in masterclass settings. Drop-in students are
permitted in teen/adult classes on a space-available basis for $16 per class. However, most classes fill up quickly with
registered students, leaving no room for drop-ins. It is wise to secure a space in class by registering for the full semester.
