What’s more American than apple pie? Tap dance! An
exciting and challenging art form that developed out of
African poly-rhythms in America’s jazz age, tap is highly energetic and fun. We teach “hoofing,” or rhythm tap made
popular by artists like Savion Glover and Gregory Hines, as
opposed to Broadway-style tap. The form’s musicality and
rich percussive traditions are emphasized through fundamental
skills and increasingly intricate progressions. Level
II is faster-paced, and explores more complex rhythms and
choreography. Tap shoes required.
Tap II: Tap/Funk! I & II
Teens & Adults • Wednesdays • Session I: Sept 24-Oct 29; Session II (just added): Dec 3-17 • 7:15-8:30 pm • Lisa Hopkins • $90/6 wks •
Limit: 18
OPTIONAL CLASS TRIP: Savion Glover’s Bare Soundz • Thu, Oct. 9 • 7:30 pm • Flynn MainStage • $35 (major discount on a hot show!)
Get ready to groove in this high-energy class that fuses
the urban feel of hip-hop with traditional percussive tap
steps. Perfect for hip-hoppers and tappers who want to
try something a little different, this class is inspired by the
funky moves and rhythms of the latest popular music and
videos. Best of all, it’s taught by Broadway choreographer
and director of the acclaimed touring show TAP KIDS: Lisa
Hopkins! Low-heeled, Oxfordstyle
tap shoes and basic tap experience recommended
(flaps, shuffles, etc.). Don’t miss out.

JOAN DERRY has been tapping for over 30 years, and has
studied with many of the greats including Gregory Hines, Honi
Coles, Leon Collins, Brenda Buffalino, Sarah Petronio, and more.
She specializes in rhythm tap, the percussive and improvisational
root of the form.
LISA HOPKINS is a distinguished member of The New York
City Dance Alliance who is billed as “one of New York’s leading
choreographers.” She has directed and choreographed for
Lincoln Center, Broadway and off-Broadway productions (including
coaching the leading man in the 2001 revival of Stephen
Sondheim’s Follies), and national tours including the smash TAP
KIDS which is currently touring worldwide.
The FlynnArts dance program instills a lifelong love of dance, helping veteran dancers and first-timers alike experience
the unique power of their own bodies as expressive instruments. Classes cover a breadth of styles, teaching technique
while helping students trust their own instincts—instilling confidence and a sense of accomplishment. Classes focus on
process rather than product, but a year-end optional performance satisfies dancers’ desire to share their growth and hard
work with family and friends. Our program is enhanced by connections to the world-class artists who perform on the Flynn
MainStage and share their dance styles and ideas with FlynnArts students in masterclass settings. Drop-in students are
permitted in teen/adult classes on a space-available basis for $16 per class. However, most classes fill up quickly with
registered students, leaving no room for drop-ins. It is wise to secure a space in class by registering for the full semester.
