What not to miss this semester!
Mildred Ruis and Steven Sapp of Universes have spent years inspiring inner-city students to write and appreciate poetry, performance, and self-expression. At the Flynn, they lead you through their most tried-and-true exercises, designed to awaken each individual’s unique voice, both written and oral. Bring a favorite song on CD. Teachers welcome to come seize ideas!

UNIVERSES is a New York City-based ensemble of multidisciplined
writers and performers who fuse poetry, theater, jazz,
hip-hop, politics, down home blues, and Spanish boleros to
create challenging and entertaining theatrical works. Breaking the
bounds of traditional theater, they invite old and new generations
of theatergoers to experience the new face of American theater.
The four core company members, Steven Sapp, Mildred Ruiz,
Gamal Abdel Chasten, and Ninja, recently returned
from a four continent tour, a collaboration
between Lincoln Center and the US State
Department to carry American music abroad..
The FlynnArts theater program creates supportive and fun-filled learning experiences that emphasize individual expression and embrace creative choice. Classes for children build sequentially, while teen and adult classes offer in-depth exploration of specific theater arts. Small classes mean that everyone receives personal attention, and performance opportunities let students try out their skills in front of supportive audiences filled with family and friends. Tours of the historic Flynn Theatre, discounts on world-class MainStage performances, and masterclasses with extraordinary visiting artists complement the strong core program.
