Eccentric Performing is one of the most personal and paradoxical of theater forms; it can be ingenious or dimwitted, skillful or blundering. It can have a sharp verbal wit or be completely silent. It can be extremely silly while pointing out the failure of society. Above all, Eccentric Performing is funny! Open to performers of all abilities, this workshop explores bare-bones, red-nosed clowning in the search for the personal Eccentric Performer. Relationship to the audience as complicit partner, use of audience volunteers, and applications of clowning to other forms of theater are of special interest.

Photo of Avner the EccentricAVNER EISENBERG was described by New York Magazine as “a clown for the thinking man.” His show Avner the Eccentric was a Broadway hit and he has appeared on Broadway in other productions, as well as on film—most notably as the holy man in The Jewel of the Nile. He studied with Jacques Lecoq and developed a unique physical approach to comedy and acting that he teaches in workshops around the world as he tours his one-man show internationally.

Our theater program emphasizes individual expression, creative choice, and FUN! Children’s classes build sequentially on the basics, while teens and adults can explore specific theater arts in greater depth (and shorter periods of time.) We keep class sizes small so everyone gets personal attention, and vary themes so that each semester challenges returning students as well as new ones. Performance opportunities let students try out their skills in front of supportive audiences of family and friends, and tours of the historic Flynn Theatre, discounts on world-class MainStage performances, and masterclasses with extraordinary visiting artists complement the strong core program.
