Masterful jazz pianist-composer Jason Moran returns with a theatrical, multimedia jazz suite inspired by the work of conceptual artist Adrian Piper. Moran has transformed Piper’s unique combination of the personal, political, and theatrical into a highly-charged, eveninglength suite that speaks eloquently to his own life as a jazz artist and black man. Featuring Moran and his trio mates in The Bandwagon—bassist Tarus Mateen and drummer Nasheet Waits—plus guitar great Marvin Sewell, Moran’s cross-generational musical dialog with Piper asks probing questions about self-identity and artistic expression. Milestone is a thrilling jazz concert of great music, with Moran’s innovative command of funk, text, and hip-hop splicing added to the mix.
