“[That] rare choreographer with a gift for expressing emotion through dance. Varone has a company of daredevils, profoundly human super humans who dance on a dime—wheeling, darting, and slicing the air at lethal looking speeds.” —New York Times

Doug Varone's gorgeous movement conveys a breathtaking sweep that embodies mystery and emotional complexity even as it dazzles. Celebrating Varone’s 20th anniversary, this performance will feature three new repertory favorites. In Castles (2004, set to Prokofiev's Waltz Suite), Varone's dancers "surge across the stage with almost superhuman intensity," creating work that is "as nuanced as it is kinetically thrilling," (Newsday). Boats Leaving (2006, to Arvo Pärt's Te Deum for chorus and musicians) is a haunting, meditative work with heart-rending migrations of shipwrecked souls that mirror Part's inspiring music. The evening comes to a crescendo with Lux (2006, to Philip Glass' score The Light), where "Varone is the sorcerer who sets his flock in ever-escalating, space-devouring motion" (Bloomberg News), an intoxicating close to an evening of magnificent dance.
