In Ferocious Beauty: Genome, the Liz Lerman Dance Exchange investigates the implications of genetic research on all aspects of how we live in a multilayered theatrical performance combining movement, projected text, film, and music. Expressing hope and awe, the first half emphasizes a celebration of the scientific process and visionary spirit associated with the discovery of the genome. Then, in deft and unexpected ways, act two addresses issues raised by genetic advances: the nature of aging, the market for human perfection, and questions of identity. Thanks to Lerman's exuberant creativity and the contributions of 34 genetic scientists, dance and the genome literally collaborate to inspire audiences in this fascinating piece.
