Mariza is a Mozambican whose soul was forged in the old Mouraria district of
Lisbon—there she first heard fado singers, so many that their names and faces have
been lost into the mist of memory; but the reminiscences live on in her singing.
Perhaps the world’s oldest urban folk music, fado is the emotional cousin of blues,
tango, and flamenco. Mariza performs with a heartbreaking voice and graceful,
dramatic gestures, leaving slender wistful notes hanging in the air. Don’t speak
Portuguese? Não há problema. Mariza communicates directly to the soul, tugging
at the heart with a performance that speaks of longing, love, and nostalgia.
