Hailed by Alastair Macaulay of the New York Times as "the leading dancer of our
time," Soledad Barrio's performances in Noche Flamenca are wonders to behold.
But as magnificent as Barrio is, it is the communal spirit of this group from Madrid
that creates such a soulful world, by turns tender and ferocious. Like really good
jazz, flamenco is fueled by an interplay of spontaneous invention in which all
the players contribute: thrilling guitar and percussion, deep, escalating vocals,
unparalleled movement. Noche Flamenca presents the essence and integrity of
all three aspects of the form.
