"The Mother of All Enemies" - THREE PERFORMANCES!
Thursday-Saturday, January 3-5, 2008 at 8 pm - $24 adults, $20 students
"One of the most original and talented political satirists working in the theater." —New York Times
Guggenheim fellow, Bessie and Obie award-winner, and Bread & Puppet alumnus
Paul Zaloom’s mutation of the traditional Middle Eastern Karagoz shadow puppet play
examines the consequences of being on the fringes of society… every society.
In his twisted story of an Arab-Quaker-Buddhist-agnostic-political refugee-immigrantqueer-artist-weirdo pursued by an assortment of enemies, Zaloom recounts absurd
emails with Marine recruiters, fends off Christian “ex-gay” activists, and eludes
Al Qaeda and Homeland Security. Along the way, he creates the entire soundscape
with his voice and uses cantastoria (picture performance) in a frontal
comic assault on the perverse workings of our civilization.
