"Jazz Legends
& Mentors":
Avery Sharpe Quintet-
Monday, September 22 at 10:30 am; Grades 5-12;
1 hour; $12.50; Presented in FlynnSpace—the Flynn's intimate 150-seat theater!
Jazz music is a uniquely American art form, with deep roots in African-American culture that reach across continents to Latin America and Africa. Bassist Avery Sharpe has played with many of the biggest names in jazz, and pays tribute to three of his mentors in this concert: McCoy Tyner, Archie Shepp and Yusef Lateef. From a rousing Latin anthem to a haunting tune based on the five-note Rwandan Pygmy scale, Sharpe and his amazing quintet trace the influence of these three giants on the history of jazz.
