A team of instructors joins Camp Director and founder Alex Stewart to inspire students to reach new heights of creativity and proficiency, with rich opportunities to hone individual skills and master the cooperative team effort of live performance. Students work with jazz trumpet and luminary Ray Vega and a variety of other artist-educators. Take a clinic specific to your instrument and place into one of three combos where you'll work on applying the principles and nuances of improvisation, investigating chord structure, and developing melodic creativity. Additional Latin hand percussion workshops spice up the days and add to your growing musical toolkit.

RAY VEGA, a native of the South Bronx, is a veteran of the bands of Tito Puente, Ray Barretto, Mongo Santamaria, and Mario Bauza, to name a few. He has established himself as one of the innovators of the international jazz and Latin music scenes. A multi-talented trumpeter, percussionist, composer, arranger, and educator, he presents jazz from a refreshingly original and contemporary perspective. His records, including his self-titled debut Ray Vega, Boperation, and Pa'lante, have been well received by critics, audiences, and musicians alike. His latest CD, The Return of The East-West Trumpet Summit, was released in January of 2016 and received critical acclaim, reaching the top 20 of jazz radio airplay for five weeks (Jazzweek).
ALEX STEWART is a professor of music at UVM. He earned an M.A. in music from Manhattan School of Music and a Ph.D. from the City University of New York. A saxophonist, he has toured, performed, and recorded with Lionel Hampton, Dizzy Gillespie, Manhattan Transfer, Ray Charles, Wynton Marsalis, and many others. Arriving in Vermont in 1999, he created the Jazz Studies Program at UVM and founded the Latin Jazz summer camp at the Flynn with the late trombonist Rick Davies and his group Jazzismo in 2004.
