Flynn Show Choirs: Juniors, Teens, & Selects

Congratulations Winter/Spring Show Choir 2020 students! Click here to see the placements.

These powerhouse troupes combine high-energy movement with tight vocals, rehearsing a dynamic musical repertoire of Broadway and pop music for performances throughout the year. Members build musician-ship, stage presence, and dance skills as they progress through the various levels.

Junior Show Choir (grades 4-7, by audition): The perfect talent incubator for performers who aspire to be triple threats. Material is suited to developing skills and potential.

Junior Select Show Choir (grade 6-7, by audition): This group provides an opportunity to our young performers who have some experience to take the next step to expand their performance repertoire. Juniors in this group will stay an extra hour (from 12:45-1:45) to prepare additional material in a small ensemble setting.

Teen Show Choir (grades 7-12, by audition): Students who are on their way to synthesizing all three art forms - dancing, singing, and acting - get the opportunity to challenge themselves with thoughtful and complex material while continuing to build a solid performance foundation.

Teen Select Show Choir (grades 10-12, by audition): A high level of expected proficiency both challenges and rewards performers whose skills call for more demanding material. Students in this group will stay an extra hour (from 3:30-4:30) to prepare additional advanced material in a small ensemble setting.

How to prepare for Jazz auditions:

Brass and wind players are encouraged to bring one or two pieces or jazz tunes which demonstrate their range and ability level at playing from staff notation; in addition to this, bass players and chord instrument players should demonstrate their ability to read chord symbol notation through comping or playing bass lines.  Those with improvising experience may demonstrate that skill as well in their piece.  Playing a jazz tune is helpful but not required.  Students will also be asked to do some simple sight reading of single note lines (and chord progressions for players of chord instruments.)  Students are placed in the three Flynn jazz combos based on the following criteria: a) demonstrating a basic level of instrumental competency (generally, most players placed in groups have an average of two years’ experience  playing in a school ensemble on their instrument and/or working with a private teacher), b) age range (we have two groups for middle to high school age students and two groups for adults, but do occasionally mix ages), c) schedule availability and d) instrumentation needs of each group (each combo needs to have a balance of rhythm section and single line instruments.)

Drummers are asked to play a variety of typical jazz rhythmic styles (4/4 swing, shuffle bossa nova, samba, jazz waltz - swing is important, but other than that they can either choose styles they're comfortable with or we'll suggest some), sight read some simple rhythmic notation, and demonstrate improvisation skills either through taking a short solo on their own or trading fours with us.  Students are welcome to bring along any other music to the audition that they feel would demonstrate their ability level and musical interests.

Vocalists:  The adult Jazz Combo groups are currently not taking on any vocalists. The youth combos may be able to take on vocalists.  Like other musicians, vocalists are encouraged to audition and may or may not be placed, based on the instrumental makeup of each group and at the discretion of the directors.
