Alice Murdoch painting

The Amy E. Tarrant Gallery at the Flynn Center is pleased to present the work of Vermont artist Alice Murdoch this summer. The show, titled Private Pleasures, is a collection of new oil paintings that Murdoch has been working on that focuses on "the role of food in women's lives – the control of it, the sharing of it, the comfort of it, the overindulgence of it, the lack of it".

Originally from the South, Murdoch lives in Charlotte and maintains her studio in Burlington, Vermont. She studied at the University of Vermont, the Vermont Studio Center and the Art Students League in New York. She has exhibited extensively throughout the East coast and the South, and is in many corporate and private collections throughout the United States. She paints in oil and has a penchant for portraying a certain social class, as well as general and canine portraiture.

Vermont author Bill Schubart will give a reading from his book Fat People on Friday, August 5 at 6:30 pm in the gallery.

On Thursday, August 18 at 6:30 pm, the gallery will host a panel discussion on the role food plays in our lives, presented by UVM's Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI). Panel members are professionals from UVM's HOPE Team (Help Overcome Problem Eating).HOPE is a multidisciplinary team of professionals committed to promoting positive body image and supporting students on campus. This event is free and open to the public. For more information or questions, contact Nancy Abbott-Hourigan at 652-4505.
